Have you ever considered what happens to all the soap and shampoos in a hotel that are used only a few times and then tossed away?
Truthfully, our team hadn’t thought much about it until we were looking for a volunteer opportunity and ended up spending a soapy Saturday with the folks from Clean the World Foundation. This experience demonstrated firsthand what a group of forward-thinking change makers can do for good.
Back in 2009, Shawn Siepler launched this global hygiene revolution called Clean the World Foundation to address the global health issues by using recycled and re-purposed supplies from the hospitality industry. Quite genius if you think about it…take the large volume of “waste” from the hospitality industry, re-purpose it and save millions of lives around the world.
How does this re-purposed soap save lives? Well Clean the World has the answer. Hand washing with soap significantly reduces the impact of two fatal diseases: acute respiratory infection and disease. These are two of the top killers of children under 5 years of age. To help save those lives, recycled soap is the primary ingredient in Clean the World’s global hygiene revolution.
Clean the World has partnered with leading hotel brands to receive their used soaps and shampoo so they can sterilize and re-purpose them for distribution. It’s an incredible operation to watch and one that is often powered by volunteers. Our team spent the day in their Orlando warehouse, rolling up our sleeves and helping to sort product for distribution. It was a small contribution but one that was super rewarding. The Clean the World Foundation is a fantastic group that is truly making an impact.
