Creativity takes courage. In our industry, it’s not only an essential element to our work success, but innately speaking, a way of life for most of us. As easy as it may come to some more than others, creativity should be treated as any other talent or skill – practiced often, honed in, and trusted with our natural instincts. Staying creative is no simple task and can’t be developed overnight, but with the tips below you might find it easier to keep the creative juices flowing.

Create an Environment that Speaks to You

As we all know, inviting and stimulating spaces can do wonder for the mind, body, and soul.  Whether it’s bright colors, souvenirs from your travels, or photos of family and friends, it’s important to surround yourself with what motivates you. Don’t be ashamed to proudly display your accolades or keep handy your favorite quotes – every day should be a reminder of what you’re working towards. You never know what will spark inspiration, so make sure you have a blank canvas of sorts to work clear and freely once the mood strikes!

Collaborate with Friends and Family

Don’t stow away your ideas and thoughts in a journal for all eternity – be sure to share your concepts and designs with your inner circle to bounce around ideas and for constructive feedback. Your friends and colleagues will be more than willing to give you the best advice possible to elevate your creative success.

Say “Yes”, For as Long as You Can

A favorite quote of mine that is proudly displayed in my own work office is from popular political satirist Stephen Colbert. In short, he says, “Cynics always say no. But saying ‘yes’ begins things. Saying ‘yes’ is how things grow. Saying ‘yes’ leads to knowledge. ‘Yes’ is for young people”.  Keeping an open mind, confident attitude, and rejecting an “I can’t” mentality is one of the building blocks of creativity.  It helps us remain explorers and leads us down different paths we would have otherwise strayed away from. Sticking to a simple rule of “saying yes” can open new doors and introduce us to a world of new people and cultures, and inspire creativity in the most unlikely places.

Stay Curious

Creativity is not something that can be turned on and off at the switch. It mustn’t be taken for granted and should be utilized often to keep a sharp edge. It may be easier said than done, but it’s important to stay actively inspired and producing work in order to stay creative and curious.
